Statisitcs Department - West Hall

Welcome to the Department of Statistics at UM. We’re part of the College of Literature, Science & Arts, which includes the natural and social sciences as well as humanities. Although the Department was founded only in 1969, Statistics at Michigan has a long history, dating back to the early 1900’s. UM was one of the first two American universities to offer academic programs in mathematical statistics. Harry Carver, who started the program, also founded a new journal called the Annals of Mathematical Statistics in 1930. Professor Carver also played a major role in creating the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, which was founded at a meeting in Ann Arbor in September of 1935.

 

We currently have 18 regular faculty members, several others with courtesy appointments, and about 6 teaching faculty. Faculty members have joint appointments in Biostatistics, Center for Statistical Consultation and Research, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Industrial & Operations Engineering, Institute for Social Research, Political Science, Psychiatry, Psychology, and Sociology. Our faculty members have broad research interests, covering statistical theory, methodology, and computing. We are also engaged in a wide range of interdisciplinary applications in life sciences, social sciences, engineering, information technology, etc.

We have three graduate programs: PhD, Applied Masters, and a dual Master’s degree for students already enrolled in a PhD program in another field at UM. There are more than 40 PhD students and 50 students in the two Master’s programs. We also have an undergraduate major in Statistics, an undergraduate major in Informatics (joint with Computer Science and School of Information) and two minors (in Statistics and Applied Statistics).
