Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop on Statistics and Machine Learning -
Fall 2006
There have been significant developments in the field of applied
regression and classification over the past 5-10 years,
both in statistics and in other related areas such as machine
learning and data mining. These developments are now
being applied to medical diagnosis, bioinformatics and genetic
modeling, chemical process control, shape, handwriting, speech
and face recognition, financial modeling, and a wide range of
other important practical problems. However, to some extent, the paradigms
developed in statistics and in machine learning and data mining have been
separated; the tools for analyzing and understanding methods in the two
areas are also different. Both have merit and lead to interesting
conclusions. We feel that integrating the two views has great potential
benefit both from a research and an educational perspective. Hence we
propose this workshop, which will focus on the interplay between
statistics, machine learning and data mining.
