Major in Statistics

The major program prepares students for careers in industry and government as well as for graduate programs in statistics and quantitative fields.  It emphasizes critical thinking and problem solving skills in data analysis and empirical research.  The Major program includes a core set of courses in applied statistics, statistical theory, and computational statistics.  Elective courses cover specific classes of statistical techniques, or focus on research areas where statistical analysis plays a major role.  Statistics majors learn to apply the skills they learn to diverse application areas including medicine, finance, public policy, and information technology.  Students can tailor their elective to prepare themselves for appropriate graduate programs.

Prerequisites: MATH 215 and MATH 217; EECS 182 or 183; STATS 250, 280 or 412.  (Math 417 may not be substituted for Math 217).

Requirements: Consists of at least 26 credit hours that must include the following:
Core STATS Courses: STATS 425 (3credits), STATS 426 (3 credits), STATS 500 (3 credits)
Core Computing Course: STATS 406 (4 credits)
Additional STATS Courses: At least one of STATS 415 (4 credits), STATS 430 (3 credits), STATS 470 (4 credits), STATS 480 (4 credits)
Capstone Course: STATS 485 (3 credits)
Elective Courses: Courses to be selected in prior consultation with department advisor (to bring major total to 26 credit hours).  May
include:  STATS 404, 408, 449, 489, any 500+ level STATS courses, and any additional STATS courses listed above;
300+ level EECS courses; 400+ level MATH courses (exceptions:  MATH 417, 420).

Honors Program

Any student who has maintained an overall GPA of at least 3.4 through their sophomore year may apply for admission to the honors program in Statistics by contacting an Honors Advisor.  Students in the honors program must complete the regular major program above with the following modifications:

Requirements:

MATH 451 (3 credits) must be selected as one of the elective courses.
A Statistics major GPA of at least 3.5.
Elect the Senior Honors Seminar, STATS 499 (2-3 credits), and complete a senior project under the direction of a member of the faculty.  This requirement must be arranged with a Department of Statistics Undergraduate Honors Advisor.

A student who successfully completes the concentration program should be well prepared for graduate work in statistics.
