Financial AidGraduate tuition at the University of Michigan was approximately $31,500 for non-Michigan residents for the 2007-2008 academic year. Fortunately we are able to offer financial aid to some of our applicants. Most of the financial aid available to statistics graduate students is in the form of graduate student instructorships. The department teaches a large number of undergraduate students in introductory statistics courses. Graduate students assist in the teaching of these courses. The typical graduate student instructorship carries a full tuition waiver, health insurance and a salary of over $6,000 per semester. All graduate student instructors who did not receive an undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university or did not receive an undergraduate degree from an institution where English was the primary language of instruction are additionally required to attend a three-week intensive workshop in August focusing on culture, language and teaching, and to pass a performance test of communicative ability in English, administered by the University's English Language Institute. Opportunities for graduate student instructorships for Ph.D. applicants who are not able to teach in English at the standards required by the English Language Institute are limited and are only awarded to applicants with outstanding qualifications. Some students with support for the academic year have been appointed as graduate student instructors during one of the spring or summer terms. The Department cannot guarantee this type of funding in advance. The Department also supports students as Research Assistants from federal research grants as well as industrial grants from local companies. Research Assistants are appointed by individual Professors after they have seen what a student can do and are not usually offered with admission. There are also opportunities for summer internships. United States citizens or those with immigrant visa status who come from minority groups are eligible for Fellowships during their first two years as graduate students. Some other fellowships are available through the Rackham Graduate School.
